Inspeção Automóvel (Vehicle Inspection)
Find out when and where to get your vehicle's mandatory periodic inspection. Required to legally drive in Portugal.
What you need before you start
- Documento Único Automóvel (DUA) or vehicle registration title
- Valid car insurance
- IUC paid (may be required at the inspection centre)
- Vehicle in roadworthy condition (tyres, lights, brakes, etc.)
Step by step
Check the next inspection date on the DUA or the windshield sticker
Find an authorised inspection centre at www.imt-ip.pt or search 'centros inspeção'
Schedule the inspection online (some centres allow it) or go directly
Bring the DUA and make sure your insurance is valid
The inspector checks brakes, emissions, lights, chassis, tyres and safety components
If approved: you receive the green sticker and inspection certificate
If failed: you have 30 days to fix the issues and repeat the inspection
New vehicles: 1st inspection at year 4; then every 2 years; after 8 years, annually
