NIF para Estrangeiros (Tax Number for Foreigners)
Apply for a NIF (Tax Identification Number) as a foreign citizen in Portugal. Required to work, rent a home, open a bank account and access services.
What you need before you start
- Valid passport (or identification document from country of origin)
- Proof of address in Portugal (rental contract, accommodation declaration)
- Tax representative (mandatory if not residing in the EU)
- Form available at the Tax Office (Serviço de Finanças)
Step by step
Go to a Tax Office (Serviço de Finanças) or Loja do Cidadão
Bring your passport and proof of address in Portugal
If non-EU resident, bring your tax representative (Portuguese citizen or resident)
Fill in the NIF application form at the counter
The NIF is issued on the spot, free of charge
Keep the document with your NIF — you will need it for almost everything in Portugal
You can later activate the Portal das Finanças password online
