Pensão de Velhice (Old-Age Pension / Retirement)
Apply for the old-age pension (retirement) when you reach the legal retirement age. Learn the requirements, how to calculate the amount and submit the application through Social Security.
What you need before you start
- NISS (Social Security Identification Number)
- Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card) or Chave Móvel Digital
- Having reached the legal retirement age (66 years and 4 months in 2026)
- Minimum 15 years of Social Security contributions
- IBAN for payment
Step by step
Go to Segurança Social Direta at www.seg-social.pt
Sign in with CMD or NIF + password
Select 'Pensões' (Pensions) → 'Pensão de Velhice' (Old-Age Pension)
Check your contribution record and years of contributions
Use the pension simulator to estimate the monthly amount
Fill in the old-age pension application
Submit the application — you can do so up to 3 months before reaching the age
Wait for the decision (usual timeframe: 60–90 days) and start of monthly payments
