Registo de Casamento (Marriage Registration)
Learn how to register a civil marriage in Portugal: required documents, where to celebrate, deadlines and how to obtain the marriage certificate.
What you need before you start
- Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card) of both parties
- Updated birth certificate (issued within the last 6 months)
- Marriage declaration (obtained at the registry office)
- Proof of address
- If divorced/widowed: previous marriage certificate with annotation
- If foreign: translated and apostilled documents
Step by step
Go to the Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil) in the area of residence of one of the parties
Request the 'Organização do Processo de Casamento' (Marriage Process Organisation)
Submit the required documents for both parties
Wait for the publication of the banns (10 days)
After the banns, schedule the date of the civil ceremony
On the day, both parties and 2 witnesses over 18 with identification must attend
The registrar performs the ceremony and records the marriage
The marriage certificate is available immediately
