Registo de Nascimento (Birth Registration)
Register your child's birth. Mandatory within the first 20 days after birth. Can be done at the hospital or at the civil registry office.
What you need before you start
- Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card) of both parents
- Proof of delivery document (issued by the hospital)
- Marriage certificate (if married) or cohabitation declaration
- Chosen full name for the child
Step by step
Option 1: Register at the hospital, at the 'Nascer Cidadão' (Born Citizen) desk (when available)
Option 2: Go to the Civil Registry Office (Conservatória do Registo Civil) within 20 days
Present the identification documents of both parents
Submit the proof of delivery provided by the hospital
State the chosen full name for the child
The civil registrar records the birth registration
The child's Citizen Card is issued immediately (at hospital) or scheduled
Registration is free when done within the legal 20-day deadline
