Subsídio por Morte e Despesas de Funeral (Death Grant and Funeral Expenses)
Apply for the death grant and funeral expense reimbursement through Social Security. Financial support for family members of a deceased beneficiary.
What you need before you start
- Death certificate (Certidão de óbito)
- NISS of the deceased
- Applicant's Cartão de Cidadão (Citizen Card)
- Proof of kinship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, etc.)
- Funeral expense invoice (for funeral reimbursement)
- Applicant's IBAN
Step by step
Go to Segurança Social Direta or visit a service office in person
Select 'Prestações' (Benefits) → 'Subsídio por Morte' (Death Grant)
Fill in the application with the deceased's and applicant's details
Attach the death certificate and proof of kinship
For funeral reimbursement: also attach the funeral expense invoice
The application must be made within 1 year of the death
The death grant equals 3 times the value of the pension or reference salary
Wait for processing (usual timeframe: 30–60 days)
